Do you ever notice where your attention wanders during the day? Where your thoughts are? I never used to pay attention to that but now I try to consciously notice what I focus on. Einstein said, “Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality.” Maybe that sounds a bit hairy but I think there is a lot of truth in it. What we focus our daily energy on is what we solidify in life. If you have a job you hate and you keep thinking about how much you hate it, you keep tapping into that negative aspect of your life. On the other hand, if you focus instead on the job you would like to have, think of ways to get it, go about finding it, sending applications, etc. you are tapping into a very positive field of energy and feeding your desires and passion. I believe that this type of intentionally directed attention is more likely to produce beneficial results. It’s very easy for our mind to get lost and keep going in circles; it almost has a life of its own. But it is also possible for us to control it to a certain degree. People in meditation and yoga classes are trained to do that (again, to a degree). In my personal experience it’s much easier to control my mind and my attention and thoughts when my mind is clear and uncluttered, and I can actually notice my own thoughts. Three factors that can help clear your mind are these:
Spending time outdoors, because it gets you out of your head and helps your brain to relax and stop fidgeting. Nature is unrushed and it tends to have a calming effect on humans.
Eliminating distractions, such as endless scrolling through social media, checking phone for no reason, watching too much TV, etc. It’s so easy to get caught up in a virtual world and, while it gets us away from our own thoughts, it rarely gets us far. I consider these activities entertainment and try to put time limits on them and not let it get out of control. For example I practice phone free Saturdays when I don’t use my phone all day, and the effect is priceless. I feel more peaceful and collected and able to focus easier.
Minimizing – having too much clutter can translate into mind clutter and more distractions and restlessness. I am a believer that less is more. This belief came from my personal experience after I got rid of over 95% of everything I owned. Of course you don’t need to go that extreme! But getting rid of things that you don’t need, use, or love can clean up your physical and mental space.
